Al Mourjan Doha

A grand lobby requiring both ambient intimacy and architectural drama.

Al Mourjan is a landmark 5-star hotel located on Doha's vibrant corniche, overlooking the shimmering waters of the Arabian Gulf. The hotel's owners approached Yakeen Lighting with a brief to illuminate the grand lobby and three signature restaurants — a combined area of 3,500 sqm with soaring 8-meter ceilings in the main atrium.

The challenge was inherently architectural. The lobby's dramatic scale had to feel impressive and memorable upon arrival, yet warm and welcoming once guests settled in. The design team sought a lighting scheme that could transition between moods — from bright and energizing during the day to intimate and atmospheric in the evening — while maintaining visual comfort throughout.

Complicating matters further, the hotel features an extensive art collection that required museum-quality wall washing, a custom bronze patina finish for all visible fixtures, and a DMX-controlled facade lighting system that could be programmed for special events and national celebrations.

Key design objectives:

• Multi-layered lighting scheme — ambient, task, accent, and decorative layers working in harmony
• UGR < 19 throughout — zero glare in all public areas, including the 8m atrium
• Tunable white technology — color temperature shifts from 2200K to 4000K throughout the day
• Custom bronze patina finish — all fixtures matched to interior bronze hardware
• DMX scene control — programmable scenes for day, evening, night, and special events
• Art wall washing — precise, uniform illumination for the hotel's art collection

A multi-layered scheme that transforms with the day.

Our design response is a sophisticated, multi-layered lighting scheme that works on multiple levels simultaneously. Each layer contributes to the overall atmosphere, and together they create an environment that feels both monumental and intimate — depending on the time of day and the selected scene.

Cove Lighting for Architectural Height

The 8-meter lobby presented both an opportunity and a challenge. We used custom linear cove lighting recessed into architectural slots at multiple levels — at the 4m, 6m, and 8m elevations — to create a layered, volumetric effect. The cove fixtures use tunable white LEDs that shift from a crisp 4000K during daytime hours to a warm, inviting 2200K in the evening. This vertical layering makes the space feel grand without overwhelming the people within it.

Decorative Pendants for Human Scale

To bring light down to a human scale within the monumental space, we collaborated with the interior designer to integrate custom decorative pendants at seating level. These handcrafted bronze fixtures provide pools of warm, intimate light over lounge areas and reception desks, creating zones of comfort and conversation within the vast lobby. Each pendant was finished in a custom bronze patina that perfectly matches the hotel's door hardware, railings, and decorative elements.

Wall Washers for Art & Architecture

The hotel's extensive art collection — including large-format photographs, paintings, and sculptural installations — demanded museum-quality wall washing. Our asymmetric wall washer fixtures deliver perfectly uniform illumination across each canvas, with CRI 95+ color accuracy and zero visible scalloping. Fixtures are fully concealed within ceiling coves and track channels, making the light source invisible and drawing full attention to the art.

DMX-Controlled Facade Lighting

The exterior facade features a custom DMX-controlled lighting system with tunable white and RGBW accent capabilities. The system is programmed with multiple scenes — an elegant warm white scene for normal evenings, dynamic color scenes for Qatar National Day and other special occasions, and a low-level night mode that respects the surrounding residential area while maintaining the hotel's presence on the Doha skyline.
