Majestic exterior facade lighting and refined interior ambient light for an 8,000 sqm palace complex — a project where craftsmanship, certification, and cultural sensitivity converge.
Commissioned by the Royal Commission for a palace complex in the holy city of Makkah, this project represents one of Yakeen Lighting's most significant and exacting commissions to date. The 8,000 sqm complex encompasses multiple buildings, extensive gardens, courtyards, and interior spaces — all requiring bespoke lighting solutions of the highest caliber.
The brief was both aesthetic and technical. Externally, the palace facade and surrounding landscape needed to convey a sense of grandeur and dignity appropriate to a royal residence, with precise beam control to illuminate architectural features without creating light spill or glare. Internally, the lighting had to be refined and warm — supporting the palace's rich interiors and creating a comfortable, welcoming environment for residents and distinguished guests.
A critical requirement was full SASO 2.0 / G-Mark certification for every fixture — both interior and exterior. This necessitated a rigorous approach to product selection, thermal engineering, and documentation. Additionally, the control system had to integrate with the palace's existing KNX building management system, requiring deep DALI-2 + KNX integration expertise.
Key design objectives:
Our approach combined rigorous engineering with exquisite craftsmanship. Every element was designed and specified to meet the dual demands of royal-level aesthetics and the most stringent regulatory standards in the region.
For the palace facade and exterior architecture, we designed a suite of custom flood lights with precise beam control optics. These fixtures feature asymmetric and symmetric beam patterns tailored to specific architectural elements — columns, arches, cornices, and domes. The precision optics ensure that light falls exactly where it is intended, with minimal spill and zero upward light — an important consideration in the sacred city environment.
All exterior fixtures are IP66 rated and constructed from marine-grade stainless steel with custom bronze and gold powder-coat finishes. They are engineered for the extreme climate of Makkah — with custom heat sink designs that maintain performance at ambient temperatures above 50°C. High-temperature LED drivers rated for 70°C operation are used throughout, ensuring long life and reliable performance.
In the palace's principal reception rooms, corridors, and formal spaces, we specified our premium linear systems with a genuine 24K gold leaf finish — hand-applied by master craftsmen. This finish complements the palace's gilded interiors and reflects warm, golden light throughout each space. The linear profiles are seamlessly integrated into architectural coves and ceiling details, providing soft, indirect ambient illumination that bathes each room in warmth.
Every fixture specified for the project underwent full SASO 2.0 / G-Mark certification testing. Our engineering team worked closely with SASO-accredited testing laboratories to ensure compliance with all relevant Saudi standards — including SASO 2902 for energy performance, SASO IEC 60598 for safety, and SASO 261 for electromagnetic compatibility. The complete certification dossier was delivered to the Royal Commission as part of project handover.
The entire lighting system is controlled through a hybrid DALI-2 + KNX architecture. DALI-2 provides precise individual fixture control and dimming, while KNX integration allows the lighting system to communicate with the palace's building management system — integrating with HVAC, security, and audiovisual systems. Multiple lighting scenes are programmed for different times of day, events, and seasons, all accessible through both wall panels and a custom mobile application.
Every fixture fully certified to Saudi Arabian standards — SASO 2902 energy performance, SASO IEC 60598 safety, and SASO 261 EMC. Complete documentation and test reports provided.
All outdoor fixtures rated IP66 for total dust protection and powerful water jet resistance. Marine-grade stainless steel construction with corrosion-resistant finishes.
Hand-applied genuine 24K gold leaf on selected interior linear profiles and decorative fixtures. Applied by master craftsmen using traditional gilding techniques.
Hybrid control architecture with DALI-2 for precise fixture control and KNX for building system integration. Seamless BMS connectivity, scene control, and mobile app access.
