Contemporary Saudi hospitality — where traditional Najdi craft meets modern luxury, one carefully lit moment at a time.
The Riyadh Boutique is a 45-key luxury boutique hotel in the city's upscale Al-Malqa district. The developer's vision was to create something different from the international chain hotels that dominate the market — a property with local character, intimate scale, and genuine Saudi hospitality.
The design language draws from traditional Najdi architecture — thick walls, geometric patterns, shaded courtyards, and the iconic Najdi window — reimagined through a contemporary lens. Materials include rammed earth textures, hand-carved wood, and woven textiles from local artisans.
The challenges were threefold: achieving SASO 2902 compliance on every custom piece (an absolute requirement for hotel licensing), delivering dimming quality smooth enough for a fine-dining restaurant atmosphere, and completing the entire lobby package on a fast-track 6-week timeline to meet the hotel's soft opening date.
Our design philosophy for The Riyadh Boutique centers on a single idea: light should welcome, comfort, and surprise. Every lighting decision was made through the lens of hospitality — how does this light make the guest feel?
Warm public areas: 2700K throughout all public spaces — lobby, restaurant, lounge, and corridors. The warm color temperature creates an intimate, residential feel that distinguishes the property from larger chain hotels.
Balanced guest rooms: 3000K in guest rooms for a slightly brighter, fresher feeling that still feels warm and luxurious. Bright enough for business travelers, cozy enough for leisure.
Four layered scenes: Welcome (bright arrival), Dining (intimate restaurant), Relax (evening lounge), and Night (subtle guide lighting). Each scene is programmed into the DALI control system and scheduled automatically.
The signature element is a custom 12-piece lantern cluster in the lobby, inspired by traditional Najdi lanterns but reimagined in brushed brass and etched glass — a contemporary tribute to local craft.
From arrival to rest, each space was designed to feel intentional and deeply personal.
A 12-piece custom lantern cluster floats above the double-height lobby, creating a warm canopy of light. Wall grazing along rammed-earth feature walls highlights texture and depth, while the reception desk is lit with soft, flattering downlights for a welcoming check-in.
Intimate dining lighting with candle-like warmth — 2400K pendants hover above each table, creating personal pools of light. CRI 95+ ensures food looks its best. Dimming curves are calibrated for smooth, flicker-free transitions from lunch to dinner service.
Layered lighting with intuitive bedside controls — ambient, reading, and accent modes at the touch of a button. Blackout-ready night lights guide guests to the bathroom without disrupting sleep. 3000K for a balanced, restful environment.
From the lobby statement piece to the guest room controls, every element was designed for this specific property.
Every custom fixture required SASO 2902 certification — a rigorous process that typically takes 8-10 weeks. Meanwhile, the developer had committed to a soft opening date, and the lobby lighting was on the critical path. Standard sequential prototyping then testing simply wasn't possible.
We ran parallel prototyping and certification testing, with our engineering team and the SASO lab working in lockstep from day one. Design iterations happened in real time with lab feedback. We also staged all components in our local Riyadh warehouse, so certified pieces could be installed immediately while remaining units completed testing. The lobby was delivered in 5.5 weeks — ahead of schedule.
Yakeen understood what we were trying to build — a hotel that feels like home, not a showroom. The lighting is the reason guests say our lobby feels so welcoming. And they delivered on time, which in this market is almost unheard of.
From boutique hotels to grand resorts, we design lighting that elevates the guest experience and supports your brand. Let's discuss your project.
