Retail lighting specification for
Saudi Arabia’s luxury boom.
Everything you need to know about specifying retail lighting in KSA — from CRI and beam angles to SASO 2.0 certification and SABER clearance.
Saudi retail is exploding. Lighting makes or breaks it.
Riyadh Boulevard, Via Riyadh, Jeddah Corniche, The Avenues — Saudi Arabia’s retail landscape is transforming faster than any other market in the region. International luxury brands are expanding rapidly. Local concepts are raising the bar. And customers have never been more discerning.
In this environment, lighting isn’t just functional. It’s a brand experience tool. The right light makes merchandise pop, creates atmosphere, and influences how long customers stay — and how much they spend.
But retail lighting in Saudi Arabia comes with unique challenges: SASO 2.0 certification is mandatory. SABER registration is required for every shipment. And the harsh desert climate means fixtures need to handle extreme temperatures and humidity.

The numbers that matter for retail.
These are the key metrics every retail lighting specification should define.
Color Rendering
Minimum CRI 90 for general retail. For fashion, cosmetics, and fresh food, specify CRI 95+. For premium jewelry and art, CRI 98.
CCT (Color Temperature)
Warm white (2700K–3000K) for most luxury retail. 3500K for modern/tech concepts. Avoid anything above 4000K for fashion and luxury.
Horizontal Illuminance
General retail: 500–750 lux. High-end fashion: 750–1000 lux. Window displays: 2000–3000 lux for daytime visibility.
Glare Control
UGR 19 maximum for sales floors. Use deep-recessed optics, honeycomb louvers, or lens-based anti-glare solutions.
Control Protocol
DALI-2 is the standard for Saudi retail. Allows individual fixture control, scene setting, and integration with BMS.
Beam Angles
Narrow spots (10°–15°) for accent lighting. Medium floods (24°–36°) for general merchandise. Wide (40°+) for wall washing.

Track Lighting
The workhorse of retail lighting. Track systems offer maximum flexibility — critical for stores that rearrange displays seasonally.
- 3-phase track (most common)
- 48V magnetic track (premium)
- Adjustable beam angles
- CRI up to 98
Recessed Downlights
For general ambient lighting in sales floors, fitting rooms, and back-of-house. Choose deep-recessed for glare control.
- Round & square options
- Trimless for premium feel
- UGR < 19 optics
- Tunable white available
Linear Systems
For continuous runs of light — ideal for ceiling coves, corridor lighting, and minimalist retail concepts.
- Seamless runs up to 6m
- Suspended or recessed
- Direct / indirect options
- Custom lengths available
Window & Display
Window displays need high-output fixtures that cut through daylight. Track systems with narrow beams and high-CRI LEDs are standard.
- 2000+ lux target
- Narrow beam (10°–15°)
- CRI 95+ minimum
- DALI dimming for day/night
SASO 2.0 for retail lighting.
Every lighting fixture in a Saudi retail project must be SASO 2.0 certified. This applies to everything from track heads to downlights to decorative pendants. No exceptions.
What this means for your retail project
- All fixtures need certification — not just the main ones. Even accent lights and decorative pieces.
- SABER registration is mandatory — each model must be registered on the SABER platform before shipment.
- Labeling must include Arabic — every fixture and its packaging needs Arabic + English marking.
- Custom fixtures take longer — if you’re specifying custom pieces, build 8–10 weeks for certification into your timeline.
Common Retail Pitfalls
- Assuming imported fixtures are SASO-certified
- Forgetting to certify track accessories
- Last-minute custom fixture requests
- Underestimating SABER processing time
- Ignoring Arabic labeling requirements
Luxury vs. mass market. Different specs.
Not all retail lighting is the same. Here’s how the specification changes by segment.
Luxury / Premium
Boutiques, jewelry, watches, high fashion
- CRI: 95–98
- CCT: 2700K–3000K
- Lighting type: Track + accent spotlights
- Control: DALI-2 with scene presets
- Beam angles: Multiple — 10° to 36°
- Finishes: Custom (white, black, gold, bronze)
- Glare: UGR < 16 for premium
Mid-Market / Fashion
Fast fashion, lifestyle, cosmetics
- CRI: 90–95
- CCT: 3000K–3500K
- Lighting type: Track + downlights combination
- Control: DALI-2 or 0–10V
- Beam angles: 24°–36° standard

Food & Supermarket
Grocery, fresh food, F&B retail
- CRI: 80–90 (90+ for fresh)
- CCT: 3500K–4000K general
- Lighting type: Panels + linear

- Special: Fresh food spectrums
- Efficiency: 120+ lm/W
- Glare: UGR < 22
Retail lighting mistakes that cost you money.
Specifying by brand, not by spec
Don’t just specify a brand name. Specify the actual performance metrics — CRI, beam angle, UGR, lumens. Then find a specification partner who can meet those specs at a fair price.
Ignoring glare
Harsh glare makes customers uncomfortable and cheapens the brand. Always specify UGR values and use deep-recessed or louvered optics.
Wrong CRI for the merchandise
CRI 80 looks flat on fashion and cosmetics. For anything where color accuracy matters, specify CRI 95 minimum.
Skipping SASO verification
Don’t take a specification partner’s word for it. Ask for actual SASO certificates and verify them on the SABER platform before placing the order.
No sample evaluation
Always get samples before committing to a full order. See the light quality in person, in your actual space, before it’s too late.
One-size-fits-all approach
Entry, sales floor, fitting rooms, windows, cash wrap — each zone needs different lighting. A good spec treats them differently.
