Specification-Grade Lighting 101
What is specification-grade LED lighting?
Specification-grade LED lighting refers to commercial and architectural luminaires
engineered to meet precise performance criteria for professional projects. Unlike
consumer or commodity lighting, spec-grade fixtures have verified photometric
data, controlled color consistency (MacAdam 3-step or better), documented driver
performance, thermal management validated by LM-80 testing, and published
efficiency ratings. They are intended for use by architects, lighting designers,
and MEP engineers who need to write them into construction specifications with
confidence that the delivered product will match the documented performance.
What is the difference between commercial grade and specification grade lighting?
Commercial-grade lighting is built for basic commercial use with acceptable
performance and reliability. Specification-grade lighting is a higher tier
designed for architectural specification — it includes full photometric
testing reports (IES files), tighter color tolerances, better optical control
(UGR ratings, precise beam angles), longer warranties (5+ years), premium
drivers from brands like Philips Xitanium or Tridonic, and complete submittal
documentation. Spec-grade fixtures can be written into project specifications
with performance guarantees, while commercial-grade is typically selected by
contractors based on price and basic fit.
What does CRI 90+ mean and when do I need it?
CRI (Color Rendering Index) measures how accurately a light source renders
colors compared to a reference source. CRI 90+ means the light source scores
90 or higher on the 0-100 CRI scale, indicating excellent color rendering.
You need CRI 90+ in spaces where color accuracy matters: retail (especially
fashion and food), hospitality (lobbies, restaurants, guest rooms), high-end
residential, galleries, and healthcare facilities. For premium projects,
CRI 98 with R9>50 is recommended for true museum-grade color quality.
Yakeen fixtures are available in CRI 90+ standard and CRI 98 premium options.
What is UGR<19 and why is it important for office lighting?
UGR (Unified Glare Rating) is a standardized measure of discomfort glare
from luminaires in an interior space. UGR<19 means the fixture produces
low enough glare to be suitable for general office environments where
people work at screens and on documents. Achieving UGR<19 requires
deep-recessed optics, louvers, or specific lens designs — it cannot
be achieved by standard flat-panel or basic downlight fixtures. For
open-plan offices, meeting rooms, and educational spaces, UGR<19 is
typically specified to ensure visual comfort and productivity.
What are IES photometric files and why do I need them?
IES photometric files are standardized data files that contain the complete
light distribution characteristics of a luminaire — intensity values
at every vertical and horizontal angle, measured in candelas. Lighting
designers use these files in software like DIALux, Relux, and AGi32 to
calculate light levels, uniformity, glare ratings, and energy consumption
for a project. Without IES files, a designer cannot accurately simulate
how a fixture will perform in a space, which means the fixture cannot be
properly specified. Yakeen main product lines come with IES LM-63 format
photometric files generated from goniophotometer testing at accredited third-party and partner laboratories.

GCC Compliance & Certification
What is SASO 2902 certification for LED lighting?
SASO 2902 is the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization's
energy efficiency certification program for lighting products sold in
Saudi Arabia. It replaced the original SASO certification scheme and
sets minimum efficacy (lumens per watt) requirements for LED lamps and
luminaires. Products must be tested by an accredited laboratory and
registered through the SABER platform to obtain a Certificate of
Conformity (CoC) before they can be imported into Saudi Arabia.
SASO 2902 covers both energy performance and safety requirements
based on IEC 60598-1 standards.
What is G-Mark certification and do I need it for GCC projects?
G-Mark (Gulf Conformity Mark) is a regional certification mark indicating
that a product meets the technical requirements of Gulf Standardization
Organization (GSO) standards. It is required for certain product categories
being sold in GCC countries. For LED lighting products, G-Mark certification
demonstrates compliance with Gulf standards for safety and performance.
While not all GCC markets require G-Mark for every lighting product,
having G-Mark certification simplifies market access across all six GCC
countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain) and is
increasingly specified in large-scale government and commercial tenders.
What lighting certifications are required for Saudi Arabia projects?
For LED lighting products in Saudi Arabia, the primary requirements are:
SASO 2902 Energy Efficiency Certification — mandatory for most LED lighting products, registered through SABER.
SABER Product Registration — online platform for obtaining Certificates of Conformity for customs clearance.
IEC 60598-1 Safety — luminaire safety standard, required as the basis for SASO certification.
G-Mark (optional but recommended) — Gulf-wide conformity mark, often required for government and large-scale tenders.
Yakeen Lighting provides full SASO 2902 certified product lines with complete SABER registration support and documentation for Saudi projects.

What is SABER and how does it work for lighting imports?
SABER (Saudi Electronic System for Conformity Assessment and Clearance)
is the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization's (SASO) online platform for managing
product conformity assessment and issuing Certificates of Conformity
for imported goods. For lighting products, the process works as follows:
(1) The registering party or provider registers the product on SABER, (2) a
SASO 2902 accredited testing lab tests the product and issues a test
report, (3) a certification body reviews the documentation and issues
a Product Certificate of Conformity (PCOC), and (4) for each shipment,
a Shipment Certificate of Conformity (SCOC) is issued. The SCOC is
required for customs clearance at Saudi ports.
How long does SASO certification take for LED lighting products?
The typical timeline for SASO 2902 certification for LED lighting
products is 3-6 weeks from sample submission to certificate issuance.
This includes: 1-2 weeks for laboratory testing (photometric, electrical
safety, and EMC tests), 1-2 weeks for documentation review by the
certification body, and approximately 1 week for SABER platform registration
and certificate issuance. Rush options are sometimes available. Yakeen
Lighting maintains active SASO 2902 certifications for our core product
lines, so certified fixtures can ship immediately without waiting for
new certification.
Do you provide MOIAT certification for the UAE market?
Yes, we provide MOIAT (Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, formerly ESMA)
compliance support for UAE projects. Our product lines meet ECAS (Emirates
Conformity Assessment Scheme) requirements, and we provide all necessary
documentation including test reports, technical files, and declaration
of conformity for UAE market access. For Dubai-specific projects, we
can also provide documentation supporting Dubai Municipality requirements
and DEWA specifications.
